THE STORY
Mutilator was painted during the final year of creating my first official solo album.
Producer Will Taubin and I spent nearly three years building the record together after being introduced through a mutual appreciation of each other’s work. As the music evolved, it became clear that the album needed a cover capable of carrying the same weight as the songs themselves.
Growing up on hip-hop and heavy metal, I was just as captivated by album artwork as I was by the music inside. Those covers became worlds I wanted to step into before hearing a single note. I wanted my first record to create that same feeling—to invite people into another place before the music even began.
Mutilator became that doorway.
Looking back, it established something that has remained with every Boxguts release since: the artwork isn’t separate from the music. They’re the same world.
WITHIN MUTILATOR
Hidden worlds emerge one layer at a time.
